I LOVE that the wonderful Katie Pritchard is Jack in this year's Pantomine Jack and the Beanstalk. After watching her as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and Crepe in Beauty in the Beast, my heart burst with joy to see her name on the lineup this year.

My favourite independent bookshops in Sussex
I have two wonderful independent Book Shops within a short drive from my home. It is probably a good job they are not within walking distance - I'm pretty sure I'd be flat broke - I seem to think I have an infinite amount of time each day to read!

Mushroom season at the RSPB in Pulborough
I have never noticed how many events and how much information there was around the wonderful kingdom of mushrooms until we visited Pulborough Brooks in October.
The visit had come about after seeing that my wonderful hairdresser had spent the day in Pulborough on a Fungus trail. When I spoke to her about this, she had told me of how much fun she'd had walking through the woods across the downs trying to spot all the different mushrooms.

Should we lose the luxury of using our beaches?
In July I went to Brighton to get my jab. I pop into the Brighton Centre first thing in the morning and my partner and son spent some time on the beach. Unlike 12 weeks ago though, Brighton beach had been heaving the day before.
While waiting in line I got a text to say my son was beside himself at the state of the beach and was sent this photo:
That is 9am on a Sunday morning in Brighton! How disgusting!

This year we've not been out to many events due to constantly being put into Lockdowns or restrictions, but fortunately, we were able to feel all Christmasy thanks to Wakehurst's Glow Wild 2020 Trail.

We loved visiting the Bat Hotspots at Arundel
I didn't realise just how tiny bats were! I'm thinking I'm getting them mixed up with Fruit Bats that we see at Drusillas, which in comparison to the Soprano Pipistrelle bats at Arundel wetlands are massive.

The fabulous giant Lego animals were back at Arundel
I live on the south coast of England, and I'm so fortunate to have the sea to the south and the downs to the north and in between, there is a whole array of fields, castles, farms and more to visit.
One of my favourite spots is the Wetlands at Arundel, not least of all because you have the castle immediately in your sites as you reach this historic little town. But the Castle is for another day. This January we visited the wetlands for their giant Lego brick animal event.

Our day out at Drusillas Park in Sussex
We have the most fantastic Zoo and Park in Sussex and one that my little family has visited a few times over the last couple of years, a great day out and one of our favourite pass times.
Drusillas is based in Alfriston, East Sussex so is only a 40-minute drive for us, which is perfect as it means we can leave home just after rush hour and be at the park for the opening of 10 am.
There is so much to do at the park, we spent 6 hours there, and we could have easily spent a lot longer! Here's our itinerary of the day:
The morning was spent walking around the zoo. Drusillas supply animal spotter books and Zoolympics Challenge record books which are a great addition to the trail, the kids loved completing these and made learning about the animals even more fun.
There is a clear pathway to follow so no getting lost, toilets along the way and activities to complete as well as the challenges. Our trip around the zoo watching the amazing animals, my favourite being the red panda and the slouth took us up to lunchtime.
The route works out nicely for timings, as we finished the animal section we come across the park and seating areas for lunch. There are plenty of eating establishments and seating. We took our own lunch with us and sat in the shade and watched Thomas go by.
Once the kids had refuelled they let lose in Go Wild and Go Bananas section of the Park. This has always been a hit with my son, there are lots and lots of slides, swings and constructions to climb so needless to say it took a while to try everything out. The boys are only 4 years old so they had access to Go Bananas which is suitable for children up to 6 years of age, but as we went during term time Go Wild wasn't that busy so they had a play in the 'bigger kids' playground too.
There is also an indoor soft play area, which we didn't actually venture in and hence my comment at the start, that we could have spent more than 6 hours here.
Whilst roaming around the play area the boys spotted the new 'get wet' area, and yes off came the T-Shirts and they went running through the fountains before we knew it. Now, I did know there was a water section, but I hadn't packed trunks, for no real reason other than I wasn't convinced it wasn't going to rain, forgetting kids don't care about that sort of thing!
Fortunately, whilst the kids were roaming around in the fountains being watched by daddy, I nipped to the store and bought a beach towel for them. I thought it was going to cost a fortune, but the towel was actually very reasonably priced at £9.99!
There was no concern with getting the boys away from the water as they had been looking forward to taking a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine since passing him at the beginning of the day, so I just had to merely mention Thomas and that was enough to have the boys running back to get changed.
I think the Thomas train ride was possibly the best experience for the boys, they absolutely loved it!
We made our way across the tracks and headed to the Hello Kitty section. There are 3 rides in this section, which are not manned full time when it's off peak due to the low numbers, so we only went on 2 of the 3 rides.... but that didn't stop the boys going on the hopper twice in a row.
The boys didn't seem to what to have their picture taken with kitty... so I did instead :-)
Finally, we attempted the great maze but was not to the liking of one of the boys so we backtracked out (just in case we got lost), and headed over to the trading post to buy some souvenirs instead.
Drusillas never gets old for us and this year there are some really cool events coming up:
Creepy Crawlies Weekend on 16th & 17th July
(can't see daddy wanting to come to that one)
Leo & Raph (TMNT) are visiting on 3rd August - that's a must.
I'm wondering if the kids will mind me getting a photo with Raph? Max is already counting down the days to see Leo!
Halloween Shriek Week in October - perfect birthday present for Max I feel.
Winter Wonderland Illuminations - These runs from November to 2nd January
I do rather fancy that visit too, I think that would be a spectacular site.
So as you can see, there is a lot to do on any day, whatever the weather. I love Drusillas and I will forever use their penguin and giraffe marks as points in time to show how much my son has grown!
Thank you, Drusillas Park, for a lovely day, and for all my boys for being reasonably good too ;-)
I received complimentary tickets to Drusillas for the purpose of this review

A couple of weeks ago we found ourselves with a free weekend! We didn't have parties, play dates or events to go to so out the blue we decided to visit Middle Farm located near Lewes. Middle Farm is a lovely working farm in East Sussex which is open all year round for the family to go visit the animals, eat the cheese and drink the cider.... (well the last one obviously is for us).
Armed with our wellies we set off to see the animals. As this is a working farm there are various activities the children can get involved in during the day so be sure to check out the times of the activities such as milking, feeding the pigs and meeting the sheep and rabbits. The times are also on their website, if we'd had known this, we could have planned our day a bit better to ensure we covered everything.
When we got to the farm, after the initial amusement of all the chickens just wondering around Max was very keen to go in the play area! We did try and get him to visit the animals first but found he was more interested in the animals after he'd had a good play in the park area!
So that's what we did.
The play areas are very impressive. One section has the swings and a sea-saw (less said about that the better!) and the larger section has another sea-saw and a large climbing area with ropes, monkey bars and a slide. Around both are seating areas and this is where we sat and had our lunch - with more chickens visiting us whilst Max popped in and out of the park - it worked out really well.
After some lunch Max sat and held a rabbit which he took in his stride, I was wondering if he'd then ask for a rabbit or guinea pig as he has done in the past, but that phase must be over as he didn't ask for a rabbit, in fact he now wants a blue cat called Naboo!
We met the sheep out for a walk, visited the horses and the donkey and then we found.... the hay barn!
THIS is such a great idea! Basically a barn full of hay bales and soft flooring (from said bales) makes a great soft play area with the added thrill of climbing and jumping from a good few feet up. It took him a while but once Max found his confidence on the top bales there was no stopping him - I may have ended up watching through my fingers at one point!
After a visit out on the fields to see the pigs, sheep and llama it was time to say goodbye and as we were washing our hands Max asked if he we could come back soon - this is always a good sign as he doesn't ask this everywhere we visit.
For us Middle Farm is a great day out for all the family. The open farm tickets are £4 per person, so if you go with your pack lunch and wellies you're sure to have a lovely day AND if you stop by the shop on the way out be sure to pick up their award winning cider.
