What is the "Home is where the craft is" challenge?

TV presenter and interior designer Linda Barker is supporting the launch of a Sussex-wide creative challenge this summer in aid of local homelessness prevention charity HOMELINK.

‘Makers’ of all ages and abilities are being invited to get creative at home, either on their own or with family and friends, in order to make and donate a handcrafted item for the home or garden as part of HOMELINK’s ‘Home is where the craft is’ community challenge.

All types and styles of crafty creations are welcome as challenge donations - from paintings and upcycled furniture to homemade quilts, knitted throws, ceramics, mosaics, decorated flower pots and garden sculptures.

Why is there a Challenge?

It is hoped that funds raised through the ‘Home is where the Craft is’ auction will help HOMELINK to support even more vulnerable families in 2020/21.

About HOMELINK

HOMELINK’s Service Manager, Pippa Grace: “There has been an alarming rise in the number of people recorded as homeless and in ‘priority need’ in recent years by councils across Sussex and we are now preparing for even tougher times ahead. Families with children and parents separated from their children because of their housing situation make up a significant proportion of our clients, with relationship breakdown, mental health issues, domestic violence and the loss of employment all factors that lead them to need our support. Since the Coronavirus pandemic started, we have seen a concerning rise in applications for loans to help local homeless families into housing.”

HOMELINK is the only charity in the South East of England dedicated to helping families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless into privately rented accommodation through interest-free loans to cover the cost of landlords’ deposits and advance rent. Set up 20 years ago as a direct response to rising homelessness in the Lewes District, HOMELINK helps people in Sussex who need help because they don’t qualify for council housing and/or are living in temporary accommodation but don’t have sufficient savings to cover the advance payments needed to secure a privately rented home.
